No mouthguard = no smile protection
As a dentists there are few moments we see a parent more distressed than after a sporting accident has cause their child major tooth damage.
It’s a scare tactic – the statistics are in... Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard while playing sport will keep your child is at least 60 times safer.
That’s right – 60 times!
What’s amazing is we still see only 30% of kids wearing any type of mouthguards during sport [1]. It’s often because they have an uncomfortable ‘boil & bite’ mouthguard. Mouthguards made by a dental professional will fit snuggly and enable wearers to breathe and speak more easily. Most importantly – they’ll offer far more protection.
These over the counter mouthguards are simple not as effective or safe as a custom-fitted ones. Briarna Arnold finds that most “boil and bite” mouthguards don’t fit correctly over the lip area and as a result offer far less protection to the lips, jaw and teeth. Victoria’s emergency departments treat approximated 1000 sports related dental injuries a year.
We’d like to see a year were we seen zero kids with sports injuries to teeth.
Remember, wearing a mouthguard is 60 times safer than not wearing one so please don’t risk it!
