Fissure Sealants 

What are fissures?
Fissures are the grooves that naturally occur on the biting surface of your teeth. All molars and premolar teeth have fissures. If the fissures are very deep and narrow it makes it difficult for the toothbrush bristles to fit inside to clean them. This results in food particles being trapped inside the fissures that then attract bacteria and may cause decay.

What is a fissure sealant?
A fissure sealant is a resin (plastic) or glass ionomer coating that is used to fill in the deep fissure so as to protect the tooth against the plaque and acids that may potentially cause decay. First we thoroughly clean and dry the fissure, removing any plaque and acid residue, and prepare the tooth surface. Fluid resin is applied and set, creating a durable protective layer. The whole procedure is quick and painless.
